SUMMARY:From Old to New: Discovery and Insight into a Long-Forgotten World
DESCRIPTION:Discussion group gathering at Temple Beth Am’s Adult Reading Room\, administered by Sunday Salon along with the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday September 15th\, 2024\, at 10:30 am \n\n\n\n Event administered by Sunday Salon with the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\nTemple Beth Am5950 N Kendall Drive\, Pinecrest\, FL 33156 \n\n\n\nJoin us for an engaging presentation\, starting our new season 2024-2025!\n\n\n\nFrom Old to New: Discovery and Insight into a Long-Forgotten World \n\n\n\n\nDoron Friedman\, who has lived and worked throughout the Americas\, Israel and Europe and traveled extensively to various corners of the world for both work and pleasure\, relates an incredible story of his genealogical search. In the mid-2000s\, Doron stumbled upon a treasure trove of family documents in Israel\, including photos\, official correspondence and personal letters ranging from the late 1800’s to the late 1940s. Together\, they tell a fascinating modern-day history of the Friedman family in the Old World and their experience and struggles in the Land of Israel before the creation of the modern-day State. They document everyday life in a Jewish enclave in a small Ruthenian outpost of Subcarpathian Galicia\, the trials and tribulations of soldiers and families in WWI\, interwar Poland\, Aliya to the Jewish homeland\, rising antisemitism back home\, struggles in creating a new life and the ultimate horrors of the Holocaust and the demise of those left behind in the old world. Doron will recount the process of organization\, documentation\, human interaction and the domino effect of how one discovery led to the next\, revealing fascinating historical first-person accounts and stories\, ranging from the detailed experience of a Jewish soldier in WWI to present day interactions with the family of friends mentioned in letters over 100 years ago. \n\n\n\n\nPlease confirm your attendance RSVP: jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Jordan Auslander: Genealogy Goes to the Movies
DESCRIPTION:We are celebrating our 35th AnniversaryInviting all our seniors\, past and present members who made it happen!Together with our guest speaker \n\n\n\nJordan Auslander \n\n\n\nFAMOUS GENEALOGY DETECTIVE (and comedian as well) \n\n\n\nGenealogy Goes to The Movies \n\n\n\nSunday\, February 11\, 2024\, at 11:00 AM \n\n\n\nLive Meeting at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation \n\n\n\n4200 Biscayne Blvd. Miami\, FloridaGPS search: 15 Federal Hwy\, Miami\, FL 33137 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJordan Auslander is a New York-based forensic genealogist\, title\, and real estate historian\, who has pursued cases across the United States\, The Caribbean\, Europe\, and Israel. He published an index to Jewish records in Slovak Archives\, and a Genealogical Gazetteer of Greater Hungary. He is a former board member of Jewish Genealogical Society of New York. His applied acting pretensions are as “Heir Jordan\, Extreme Genealogist\,” Telly award winner for RootsTelevision.com and the ‘reliably inappropriate’ host of IAJGS conference Game Show Night. \n\n\n\n\nGenealogy Goes to The Movies \n\n\n\nProgram summary: \n\n\n\nA half hour montage of how genealogy is portrayed in popular films and television. Hollywood does not let accuracy get in the way of a good story. This can be both infuriating in perpetuating myths and hilarious\, from a 1930 take on the future 1980 census\, name changing at Ellis Island to science fiction\, where it is still not “all on the internet:” current vital records on library open stacks and shoot-outs in cemeteries. \n\n\n\nAside from entertainment\, the two-fold purpose is to show how genealogy is pervasive in popular media and how resources and methodology are misrepresented. The discussion that follows focuses on how to manage expectations and offer reality checks for what can be accomplished with family research. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP to Paulette Bronstein at JGSGM.President@gmail.com and a copy to jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com

Through ancestral narratives filled with surprising family connections and heartwarming reunions\, you’ll gain a unique perspective on the power of genealogical research to unveil hidden stories and connections. Steve’s expertise will be at your disposal as he imparts practical research strategies and tools that will equip you for your own genealogical quests. This event is open to everyone\, whether you have Ashkenazi Dutch Jewish ancestry or simply possess a curiosity about researching in unfamiliar territories. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteve Jaron Bio \n\n\n\nSteve Jaron is a lifelong Pittsburgh resident whose passion for genealogy has been shaped by two significant experiences. Firstly\, during his bar-mitzvah trip to Israel\, he had the opportunity to meet with several relatives\, including his great uncle. His great uncle shared a captivating family story about discovering their shared ancestry when his great aunt brought a picture of her great grandparents into their home. This revelation led to the realization that they were second cousins. Although Steve would later learn that his uncle was quite the storyteller\, this tale kindled his interest in family history. \n\n\n\nThe second pivotal moment in Steve’s genealogical journey occurred during his college years when he took a Spanish class. As part of an assignment\, he had to create a family tree to learn various Spanish relationships. Fortunately\, Steve already had a well-documented family tree thanks to his great aunt’s efforts. Inspired by this class\, he decided to explore further and googled an uncommon Jewish last name\, “de Jongh.” To his surprise\, he stumbled upon an online version of a book meticulously detailing his grandmother and great aunt’s mother’s ancestors in Holland\, and from that moment\, his fascination with genealogy took root. \n\n\n\nSteve’s current genealogical focus centers on his Galitzianer and German branches\, with plans to eventually continue his father’s genealogical research in Ukraine and Belarus. In 2017\, he took on the key role of revitalizing the Jewish Genealogy Society of Pittsburgh and currently serves as its president. His commitment to the genealogical community extends beyond his local chapter. He has assumed the role of IAJGS Sysadmin and Tech Committee co-chair and serves as an IAJGS Member Liaison\, further contributing to the broader genealogy community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease confirm your attendance or request a Zoom Link:Paulette Bronstein\, President JGSGM.President@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Professor Hal Bookbinder: Practicing Safe Computing
DESCRIPTION:The Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami (JGSGM) is collaborating with the Jewish Genealogy SIG (Special Interest Group) of Naples/Lee Co FL mentored by Mr. Arthur Sissman. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom presentation: \n\n\n\nPracticing Safe Computing by Professor Hal Bookbinder\n\n\n\nAlong with malware infecting your computer and hackers attempting to con you\, your data on the Web is also at risk from breaches beyond your control. Facebook (March 2021)\, Microsoft (January 2020)\, Capital One (July 2019)\, Marriott (November 2018)\, Twitter (May 2018)\, Yahoo (September 2016) and even MyHeritage (June 2018) have experienced massive breaches in which millions of customer records were exposed. Even in the absence of bad actors\, computers become corrupted and storage devices fail resulting in the potential loss of years of genealogical research. This talk discusses the risks\, the myths\, ways to reduce the likelihood of being hacked and how to minimize the impact of hacks and breaches that do occur. For a road map of issues and solutions\, see Hal’s monthly series of Safe Computing articles\, published in the JGSCV Newsletter\, at https://www.tinyurl.com/SafeComputingArticles. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHal is a retired information systems professional who continues to instruct business courses at the university level. \n\n\n\nHe has been actively researching his genealogy for more than three decades\, identifying over 4\,000 relatives and tracing two lines to the mid-1700s in modern Ukraine. Hal has written and spoken on border changes\, migration\, citizenship\, safe computing unique research techniques. \n\n\n\nHal is a past president of the JGS of Los Angeles and of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies. Hal publishes a series of monthly articles on safe computing which are freely available at https://www.tinyurl.com/SafeComputingArticles. He and his wife\, Marci\, were raised in the Catskills of New York State and now live in the Los Angeles area.                                                                                                                                                                                                                       \n\n\n\n\n\nPlease register with jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com if you did not attend the previous classes with the mentor.
