SUMMARY:Professor Miriam Hoffman: Curious Rabbinic Tales: The Shortest Tall Stories
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Salons\n\n\n\nPresented monthly by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Miriam Hoffman is a retired professor of Yiddish language\, literature and film\, Jewish culture\, Yiddish humor\, and classical and minor Yiddish writers. She is also a known Yiddish journalist and worked as a feature writer for the Yiddish Forward from 1982 to today. Now\, with her latest book\, she brings us the magic of storytelling. Folktales belong to the earliest folk literature\, predating Jewish sources. Once they were adapted into the Jewish setting\, the tales were integrated into our own mythology. Folktales were told as parables with a moral undercurrent to expose human frailty and strength\, vanity\, and heroism. Anything that was not said openly was disguised as a parable or a folktale. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo join us by Zoom or Live Streaming\, contact JGSGM to get your link: jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Hiding In Plain Sight: A Memoir of Surviving the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:The following Zoom event is done in collaboration with Temple Beth Am Library’s Sunday Salon \n\n\n\nin observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAllan J. Hall J.D. with his own testimony \n\n\n\n\nAllan Hall was born in Cracow\, Poland in 1935. He led a charmed life until September 1939\, when Nazis marched into Poland. Seeking safety\, the family walked over two hundred miles to Lvov\, where Allan was the first child picked up in the children’s pogrom in the Lvov Ghetto. With false identity papers\, the family fled to Warsaw\, where Allan and his mother were arrested and taken to the train station to be sent to Treblinka. When the trains briefly stopped running\, Allan was marched to an orphanage in the Warsaw Ghetto. Allan’s father\, passing as Aryan\, rented an office in a high-rise building which housed German Air Force headquarters\, where they hid for two years. When the war ended\, Allan’s father was arrested\, and his mother sent Allan with his baby brother to make his way to Palestine. Hunted by the Soviets for months\, eleven-year-old Allan bravely made his way across Europe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContact us to get your link: jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Janice Masur: Shalom Uganda
DESCRIPTION:December Sunday Salons\n\n\n\nPresented monthly by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJanice Masur grew up in a tiny\, remote European Jewish community in Kampala\, Uganda\, under British Imperial rule\, with no rabbi or Jewish infrastructure. And yet\, this community of only twenty-three families formed a cohesive group that celebrated all Jewish festivals together and upheld their Jewish identity. Sadly\, while Kampala Jewry made every effort to survive\, it eventually failed and withered under the hot African sun. \n\n\n\nIn Shalom Uganda: A Jewish Community on the Equator\, Masur tells her story of living in this little-known Ashkenazi Jewish community from 1949 to 1961. Because so many Jewish communities were obliterated in the last century\, she documents\, remembers\, and preserves Kampala European Jewry with all the respect that it deserves. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Jacobvitz\, who serves on the Advisory Board of the Sousa Mendez Foundation\, brings us this fascinating author as part of his foundation’s programs. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo join us by Zoom or Live Streaming\, contact JGSGM to get your link: jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Horia Haim F. Ghiuzeli: Centuries-old history of the family names of the Jews of Morocco
DESCRIPTION:Temple Beth Am Sunday Salons via Zoom and live streaming \n\n\n\nSlice of Jewish Life + The Morocco Community\, presenting: \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHoria Haim F. Ghiuzeli\n\n\n\nHoria Haim F. Ghiuzeli\, a historian\, is the Director of the Databases of ANU – Museum of the Jewish People. The presentation focuses on the centuries-old history of the family names of the Jews of Morocco.  Surnames may provide an insight into the geographical origins of some families or into the occupations of their ancestors\, the role they played in the life of their communities and the way family members were perceived by their neighbors and friends. Understanding the rich linguistic background of the Jews of Morocco is an essential clue for a correct interpretation of the meaning of their family names. A knowledge of the meaning of these family names may reveal details about past Jewish life in Morocco and could be instrumental for a successful research of family roots. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModerated by Professor Henry Green\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor of Religious Studies of Judaic and Sephardi Studies at the University of Miami – founder of Sephardic Voices – whose latest book published through Just in Press is SEPHARDI VOICES: The Untold Expulsion of Jews from Arab Lands   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipant Sete Bentata\, a renowned architect born in Tetouan\, Morocco\, tracing her family story. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP online for the event with jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Libby Copeland: The Cultural Phenomenon of Home DNA Testing
DESCRIPTION:The following event is done in collaboration with Temple Beth Am Library’s Sunday Salon: \n\n\n\nThe Cultural Phenomenon of Home DNA Testing\n\n\n\n\n\nLibby Copeland: is an award-winning journalist who has written for the Washington Post\, New York magazine\, the New York Times\, the Atlantic\, and many other publications. She specializes in the intersection of science and culture and will explore with us the extraordinary cultural phenomenon of home DNA testing\, which is redefining family history. It will draw on Libby Copeland’s years of research for her new book The Lost Family: How DNA Testing is Upending Who We Are (Abrams\, 2020)\, which The Wall Street Journal calls “a fascinating account of lives dramatically affected by genetic sleuthing.” With more than 37 million people having been tested\, a tipping point has been reached. Virtually all Americans are affected whether they have been tested or not\, and millions have been impacted by significant revelations in their immediate families.  The presentation will discuss the implications of home DNA testing for Jewish genealogy\, as well as the unique challenges of genetic genealogy for Ashkenazim. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo join us by Zoom\, contact to get a link \n\n\n\njgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Doug Kaplan: Who Are the Israelite Samaritans?
DESCRIPTION:The Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami in collaboration with Temple Beth Am Sunday Salon is presenting this special Passover program:  \n\n\n\nWho Are the Israelite Samaritans?.\n\n\n\nPresented by Doug Kaplan\, JGSGM member\, a retired attorney\, whose blog (judaicarevisited.com) will examine the history of the Samaritans. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n While Dale Lazar\, a photographer (www.dalelazarphotography.com)\, will share his photos and personal experiences with the Samaritans of today.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIsraelite Samaritans view themselves as descendants of the Israelites that settled in the northern Kingdom of Israel after the exodus from Egypt. They trace their lineage to the tribes of Manasseh\, Ephraim and Levi and later survived the Assyrian exile of 722-721 BCE.  \n\n\n\nThere are approximately 800 Samaritans in the world today with half living in Holon\, Israel and half living in the town of Kiryat Luza\, West Bank. The Samaritans have one sacred text\, the Samaritan Torah\, written in ancient Hebrew. They are led by their High Priest; venerate their Temple Mount on Mt. Gerizim\, near Nablus; and practice a style of Israelite religion that predates the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem.  \n\n\n\nRSVP Online!\n\n\n\njgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info
