SUMMARY:From Roots to Story Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami presents \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Roots to Story Workshop \n\n\n\nA Tu BiSh’vat Family History Celebration \n\n\n\nFEBRUARY 15\, 10:30 AMTHE ADULT READING ROOM – THE HUB LIBRARYLocation: Temple Beth Am\, Adults Reading Room (The Hub Library)Address: 5950 SW 88th St\, Pinecrest\, FL 33156 \n\n\n\nOn Tu BiShvat\, the Jewish New Year of the Trees\, we traditionally celebrate planting\, growth\, and continuity. Trees remind us that what we see above ground is nourished by deep\, often unseen roots. \n\n\n\nIn that same spirit\, our special gathering celebrates personal roots—spirit\, family trees from which our own lives have grown. \n\n\n\nDuring this program\, participants from our From Roots to Story workshop will share the narratives they create about an ancestor of their choice. Each story represents a living branch of a family tree\, shaped by time\, place\, culture\, and historical events. \n\n\n\nThese short presentations reveal how individual lives were influenced by the larger world around them—and how memory\, identity\, and heritage continue to grow across generations. \n\n\n\nJust as Tu BiShvat honors the planting of trees\, this event honors the planting of stories—stories that preserve the past\, strengthen the present\, and inspire future generations. \n\n\n\n\nWe invite you to join us for this meaningful morning of reflection\, storytelling\, and shared heritage\, where personal history and Jewish tradition come together.\n\n\n\nSponsored by: Sunday Salon & the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami (JGSGM) \n\n\n\nRSVP: Etta Gold\, egold@tbam.org \n\n\n\n\nWE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU! COME CHECK US OUT!To explore the library online\, visit: TBAM.ORG/LIBRARY \n\n\n\nADULT READING ROOM REMINDERReminder to visit our own libraries here on campus where you can enjoy award-winning books and so much more. ~ We welcome you all to our extraordinary library collection\, which is now divided into three locations\, all enhance the mission of the Temple Beth Am Congregational Library – “to provide materials of education\, entertainment and enrichment for congregation and community.” Our Fiction books are in Meeting Room 2\, where you can find detailed instructions for borrowing whatever you like. On that same floor\, in the Clergy Satellite Library\, are the religious study books\, i.e. Torah\, Talmud\, observance\, education\, and languages. SUMMARY:Steve Jaron: Unlocking The Past: Unlocking the Ashkenazi Dutch Jewish Ancestry
DESCRIPTION:ANNOUNCEMENT – THE JEWISH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF GREATER MIAMI \n\n\n\nAt Greater Miami Jewish Federation4200 Biscayne Blvd. Miami\, Florida \n\n\n\nUNLOCKING THE PAST: EXPLORING ASHKENAZI DUTCH JEWISH ANCESTRY \n\n\n\nINTRODUCING STEVE JARON\, PRESIDENT OF THE JEWISH GENEALOGY SOCIETY OF PITTSBURGH\, CO-CHAIR AT IAJGS TECH COMMITTEE AND IAJGS LIASON \n\n\n\n***Meeting is scheduled for Zoom*** \n\n\n\nZoom link shared one day before the event.Light refreshments will be available. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an enlightening exploration of Ashkenazi Dutch Jewish ancestry led by Steve Jaron\, a dedicated genealogist with a compelling story to share. In this presentation\, you’ll accompany Steve on a deeply personal journey as he delves into the intriguing world of his Dutch roots within the Ashkenazi Jewish community. Through ancestral narratives filled with surprising family connections and heartwarming reunions\, you’ll gain a unique perspective on the power of genealogical research to unveil hidden stories and connections. Steve’s expertise will be at your disposal as he imparts practical research strategies and tools that will equip you for your own genealogical quests. This event is open to everyone\, whether you have Ashkenazi Dutch Jewish ancestry or simply possess a curiosity about researching in unfamiliar territories. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteve Jaron Bio \n\n\n\nSteve Jaron is a lifelong Pittsburgh resident whose passion for genealogy has been shaped by two significant experiences. Firstly\, during his bar-mitzvah trip to Israel\, he had the opportunity to meet with several relatives\, including his great uncle. His great uncle shared a captivating family story about discovering their shared ancestry when his great aunt brought a picture of her great grandparents into their home. This revelation led to the realization that they were second cousins. Although Steve would later learn that his uncle was quite the storyteller\, this tale kindled his interest in family history. \n\n\n\nThe second pivotal moment in Steve’s genealogical journey occurred during his college years when he took a Spanish class. As part of an assignment\, he had to create a family tree to learn various Spanish relationships. Fortunately\, Steve already had a well-documented family tree thanks to his great aunt’s efforts. Inspired by this class\, he decided to explore further and googled an uncommon Jewish last name\, “de Jongh.” To his surprise\, he stumbled upon an online version of a book meticulously detailing his grandmother and great aunt’s mother’s ancestors in Holland\, and from that moment\, his fascination with genealogy took root. \n\n\n\nSteve’s current genealogical focus centers on his Galitzianer and German branches\, with plans to eventually continue his father’s genealogical research in Ukraine and Belarus. In 2017\, he took on the key role of revitalizing the Jewish Genealogy Society of Pittsburgh and currently serves as its president. His commitment to the genealogical community extends beyond his local chapter. He has assumed the role of IAJGS Sysadmin and Tech Committee co-chair and serves as an IAJGS Member Liaison\, further contributing to the broader genealogy community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease confirm your attendance or request a Zoom Link:Paulette Bronstein\, President JGSGM.President@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Professor Miriam Hoffman: Curious Rabbinic Tales: The Shortest Tall Stories
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Salons\n\n\n\nPresented monthly by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Miriam Hoffman is a retired professor of Yiddish language\, literature and film\, Jewish culture\, Yiddish humor\, and classical and minor Yiddish writers. She is also a known Yiddish journalist and worked as a feature writer for the Yiddish Forward from 1982 to today. Now\, with her latest book\, she brings us the magic of storytelling. Folktales belong to the earliest folk literature\, predating Jewish sources. Once they were adapted into the Jewish setting\, the tales were integrated into our own mythology. Folktales were told as parables with a moral undercurrent to expose human frailty and strength\, vanity\, and heroism. Anything that was not said openly was disguised as a parable or a folktale. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo join us by Zoom or Live Streaming\, contact JGSGM to get your link: jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info

Facebook (March 2021)\, Microsoft (January 2020)\, Capital One (July 2019)\, Marriott (November 2018)\, Twitter (May 2018)\, Yahoo (September 2016) and even MyHeritage (June 2018) have experienced massive breaches in which millions of customer records were exposed. Even in the absence of bad actors\, computers become corrupted and storage devices fail resulting in the potential loss of years of genealogical research. This talk discusses the risks\, the myths\, ways to reduce the likelihood of being hacked and how to minimize the impact of hacks and breaches that do occur. For a road map of issues and solutions\, see Hal’s monthly series of Safe Computing articles\, published in the JGSCV Newsletter\, at https://www.tinyurl.com/SafeComputingArticles. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHal is a retired information systems professional who continues to instruct business courses at the university level. \n\n\n\nHe has been actively researching his genealogy for more than three decades\, identifying over 4\,000 relatives and tracing two lines to the mid-1700s in modern Ukraine. Hal has written and spoken on border changes\, migration\, citizenship\, safe computing unique research techniques. \n\n\n\nHal is a past president of the JGS of Los Angeles and of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies. Hal publishes a series of monthly articles on safe computing which are freely available at https://www.tinyurl.com/SafeComputingArticles. He and his wife\, Marci\, were raised in the Catskills of New York State and now live in the Los Angeles area.                                                                                                                                                                                                                       \n\n\n\n\n\nPlease register with jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com if you did not attend the previous classes with the mentor. SUMMARY:Hiding In Plain Sight: A Memoir of Surviving the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:The following Zoom event is done in collaboration with Temple Beth Am Library’s Sunday Salon \n\n\n\nin observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAllan J. Hall J.D. with his own testimony \n\n\n\n\nAllan Hall was born in Cracow\, Poland in 1935. He led a charmed life until September 1939\, when Nazis marched into Poland. Seeking safety\, the family walked over two hundred miles to Lvov\, where Allan was the first child picked up in the children’s pogrom in the Lvov Ghetto. With false identity papers\, the family fled to Warsaw\, where Allan and his mother were arrested and taken to the train station to be sent to Treblinka. When the trains briefly stopped running\, Allan was marched to an orphanage in the Warsaw Ghetto. Allan’s father\, passing as Aryan\, rented an office in a high-rise building which housed German Air Force headquarters\, where they hid for two years. When the war ended\, Allan’s father was arrested\, and his mother sent Allan with his baby brother to make his way to Palestine. Hunted by the Soviets for months\, eleven-year-old Allan bravely made his way across Europe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContact us to get your link: jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Janice Masur: Shalom Uganda
DESCRIPTION:December Sunday Salons\n\n\n\nPresented monthly by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJanice Masur grew up in a tiny\, remote European Jewish community in Kampala\, Uganda\, under British Imperial rule\, with no rabbi or Jewish infrastructure. And yet\, this community of only twenty-three families formed a cohesive group that celebrated all Jewish festivals together and upheld their Jewish identity. Sadly\, while Kampala Jewry made every effort to survive\, it eventually failed and withered under the hot African sun. \n\n\n\nIn Shalom Uganda: A Jewish Community on the Equator\, Masur tells her story of living in this little-known Ashkenazi Jewish community from 1949 to 1961. Because so many Jewish communities were obliterated in the last century\, she documents\, remembers\, and preserves Kampala European Jewry with all the respect that it deserves. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Jacobvitz\, who serves on the Advisory Board of the Sousa Mendez Foundation\, brings us this fascinating author as part of his foundation’s programs. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo join us by Zoom or Live Streaming\, contact JGSGM to get your link: jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Libby Copeland: The Cultural Phenomenon of Home DNA Testing
DESCRIPTION:The following event is done in collaboration with Temple Beth Am Library’s Sunday Salon: \n\n\n\nThe Cultural Phenomenon of Home DNA Testing\n\n\n\n\n\nLibby Copeland: is an award-winning journalist who has written for the Washington Post\, New York magazine\, the New York Times\, the Atlantic\, and many other publications. She specializes in the intersection of science and culture and will explore with us the extraordinary cultural phenomenon of home DNA testing\, which is redefining family history. It will draw on Libby Copeland’s years of research for her new book The Lost Family: How DNA Testing is Upending Who We Are (Abrams\, 2020)\, which The Wall Street Journal calls “a fascinating account of lives dramatically affected by genetic sleuthing.” With more than 37 million people having been tested\, a tipping point has been reached. Virtually all Americans are affected whether they have been tested or not\, and millions have been impacted by significant revelations in their immediate families.  The presentation will discuss the implications of home DNA testing for Jewish genealogy\, as well as the unique challenges of genetic genealogy for Ashkenazim. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo join us by Zoom\, contact to get a link \n\n\n\njgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Doug Kaplan: Who Are the Israelite Samaritans?
DESCRIPTION:The Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami in collaboration with Temple Beth Am Sunday Salon is presenting this special Passover program:  \n\n\n\nWho Are the Israelite Samaritans?.\n\n\n\nPresented by Doug Kaplan\, JGSGM member\, a retired attorney\, whose blog (judaicarevisited.com) will examine the history of the Samaritans. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n While Dale Lazar\, a photographer (www.dalelazarphotography.com)\, will share his photos and personal experiences with the Samaritans of today.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIsraelite Samaritans view themselves as descendants of the Israelites that settled in the northern Kingdom of Israel after the exodus from Egypt. They trace their lineage to the tribes of Manasseh\, Ephraim and Levi and later survived the Assyrian exile of 722-721 BCE.  \n\n\n\nThere are approximately 800 Samaritans in the world today with half living in Holon\, Israel and half living in the town of Kiryat Luza\, West Bank. The Samaritans have one sacred text\, the Samaritan Torah\, written in ancient Hebrew. They are led by their High Priest; venerate their Temple Mount on Mt. Gerizim\, near Nablus; and practice a style of Israelite religion that predates the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem.  \n\n\n\nRSVP Online!\n\n\n\njgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info
