SUMMARY:When Music Hurts! Playing Wagner in Israel...
DESCRIPTION:Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami presents \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHEN MUSIC HURTS! PLAYING WAGNER IN ISRAEL – PRO AND CON CAN ART TRANSCEND PREJUDICE? \n\n\n\nMODERATED WITH JASON CALLOWAY\, CELLIST WITH AMERNET \n\n\n\nDates: Sunday\, December 14th\, 2025Time: 10:30 AMLocation: Temple Beth Am\, Adults Reading Room (The Hub Library)Address: 5950 SW 88th St\, Pinecrest\, FL 33156 \n\n\n\n\nThe controversy over performing Wagner’s music in Israel—a nation profoundly marked by the Holocaust—raises deep ethical and aesthetic questions. Can music so closely associated with such a painful history be separated from its creator’s prejudice? Or should art always be considered inseparable from the moral character of its maker? \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nWhile our discussion will focus on Wagner’s legacy\, these questions extend far beyond one composer. They challenge us to consider how we respond to artists and artworks that reflect bias\, intolerance\, or moral contradiction in our own time. \n\n\n\nFollowing last month’s screening of the documentary Wagner’s Jews\, we invite you to join a discussion exploring the following: \n\n\n\nArt has long been regarded as a universal language—one that speaks across cultural\, historical\, and ideological boundaries. Yet history reminds us that art does not exist in a vacuum; it is inevitably shaped by the moral and political contexts in which it is created and received. \n\n\n\nThis tension becomes especially poignant in the case of Richard Wagner\, one of the most influential composers of the 19th century and also a notorious anti-Semite whose writings later resonated with Nazi ideology. \n\n\n\nRSVP to Etta Gold\, egold@tbam.org \n\n\n\n2025-12-14 Sunday Salon_edited-1\n\n\n\nADULT READING ROOM REMINDERReminder to visit our own libraries here on campus where you can enjoy award-winning books and so much more. ~ We welcome you all to our extraordinary library collection\, which is now divided into three locations\, all enhance the mission of the Temple Beth Am Congregational Library – “to provide materials of education\, entertainment and enrichment for congregation and community.” Our Fiction books are in Meeting Room 2\, where you can find detailed instructions for borrowing whatever you like. Kennedy. \n\n\n\nIf you’ve delved into the myriad conspiracy theories surrounding JFK’s death\, get ready for one that will leave you speechless–and yet it is strangely plausible. SUMMARY:Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah)
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the adult library in Temple Beth AM to observe Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) for a special reception for Dr. Peter Tarjan\, Holocaust survivor\, Thursday\, April 24th at 12:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n\nIn the face of humanity’s darkest chapter\, some stories shine as beacons of hope and resilience. Dr. Peter Tarjan’s journey from Holocaust survivor to professor emeritus stands as a powerful testament to the human spirit’s ability to triumph over unimaginable adversity. \n\n\n\n\nThis profound truth echoes through Dr. Tarjan’s remarkable life story\, which began in the shadows of Nazi-occupied Budapest. At just eight years old\, he faced a reality no child should ever experience – the loss of both parents during the Holocaust. Yet\, from these depths of tragedy\, he would rise to build an extraordinary legacy in America. \n\n\n\nAs we prepare to commemorate Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) on April 24th\, Dr. Tarjan’s presence at Temple Beth Am’s adult reading room offers us a rare and precious opportunity. His story isn’t just about survival – it’s about the power of perseverance\, the importance of memory\, and the promise of new beginnings. \n\n\n\nThrough his journey from Holocaust survivor to accomplished biomedical engineer and University of Miami professor\, Dr. Tarjan embodies the very essence of the American dream. His story reminds us that our greatest strengths often emerge from our deepest wounds\, and that the human spirit can flourish even after experiencing the unthinkable. \n\n\n\n*** Following books and works by Dr. Tarjan on display in the library \n\n\n\n“Children who survived the final solution” \n\n\n\n“Transplanted Lives The adventures of young Jewish Immigrants from post-Fascist and Communist Hungary to the Free World following the 1956 Uprising” \n\n\n\n“Red star\, blue star”: the lives and times of Jewish students in communist Hungary (1948-1956)\, compiled with Arthur Handler and Susan V Meschel \n\n\n\n“Hungarian Patchwork” with Susan V Meschel \n\n\n\nPrologue for “Two Branches Two Destinies” by Claudia Prengler StarotaIn two versions (English and Spanish)
