SUMMARY:From Roots to Story Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami presents \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Roots to Story Workshop \n\n\n\nA Tu BiSh’vat Family History Celebration \n\n\n\nFEBRUARY 15\, 10:30 AMTHE ADULT READING ROOM – THE HUB LIBRARYLocation: Temple Beth Am\, Adults Reading Room (The Hub Library)Address: 5950 SW 88th St\, Pinecrest\, FL 33156 \n\n\n\nOn Tu BiShvat\, the Jewish New Year of the Trees\, we traditionally celebrate planting\, growth\, and continuity. Trees remind us that what we see above ground is nourished by deep\, often unseen roots. \n\n\n\nIn that same spirit\, our special gathering celebrates personal roots—spirit\, family trees from which our own lives have grown. \n\n\n\nDuring this program\, participants from our From Roots to Story workshop will share the narratives they create about an ancestor of their choice. Each story represents a living branch of a family tree\, shaped by time\, place\, culture\, and historical events. \n\n\n\nThese short presentations reveal how individual lives were influenced by the larger world around them—and how memory\, identity\, and heritage continue to grow across generations. \n\n\n\nJust as Tu BiShvat honors the planting of trees\, this event honors the planting of stories—stories that preserve the past\, strengthen the present\, and inspire future generations. \n\n\n\n\nWe invite you to join us for this meaningful morning of reflection\, storytelling\, and shared heritage\, where personal history and Jewish tradition come together.\n\n\n\nSponsored by: Sunday Salon & the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami (JGSGM) \n\n\n\nRSVP: Etta Gold\, egold@tbam.org \n\n\n\n\nWE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU! SUMMARY:New Sources Available to Trace Converso and Crypto-Jewish Lineages
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Salon & The Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami (JGSGM) proudly present \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarch 15\, 10:30 AM in theAdult Reading Room – The Hub LibraryAddress: 5950 SW 88th St\, Pinecrest\, FL 33156 \n\n\n\nNew Sources Available to Trace Converso and Crypto-Jewish Lineages \n\n\n\n\nGuest Speaker: Genie Milgrom\n\n\n\nPlease RSVP or request additional information to Etta Gold\, egold@tbam.org \n\n\n\n\nInternationally known researcher and author Genie Milgrom\, a leading figure in the study of Converso and Crypto-Jewish genealogy\, will share newly emerging tools and archival materials that enable families to reconnect with ancestors whose identities were hidden for centuries. \n\n\n\nGenie Milgrom was born in Havana\, Cuba into a Roman Catholic Family of Spanish Ancestry. In an unparalleled work of genealogy\, she was able to fully document her unbroken maternal lineage 22 generations going back as far as 1405 to Pre-Inquisition Spain and Portugal. \n\n\n\nHistorical Note – Why March 15 Matters \n\n\n\nMarch 15 carries significance in Crypto-Jewish history. On this date in 1481\, the Spanish Inquisition carried out the first public sentencing and burning of individuals in Seville accused of being secret Jews \n\n\n\n(Conversos/Crypto-Jews). This tragedy marked an early and defining moment in centuries of persecution that followed\, including the 1492 Alhambra Decree. Many families later preserved their Jewish identity in secret or fled to the New World—lineages Genie Milgrom’s work helps uncover today. \n\n\n\nADULT READING ROOM REMINDERReminder to visit our own libraries here on campus where you can enjoy award-winning books and so much more. ~ We welcome you all to our extraordinary library collection\, which is now divided into three locations\, all enhance the mission of the Temple Beth Am Congregational Library – “to provide materials of education\, entertainment and enrichment for congregation and community.” Our Fiction books are in Meeting Room 2\, where you can find detailed instructions for borrowing whatever you like.
