This touching narrative mirrors countless family histories and sets the stage for our exploration of immigration stories. \n\n\n\nA week later\, accomplished filmmaker Walter Schlomann will guide you through the art of capturing your own family’s history on video. \n\n\n\nBut that’s not all – this journey becomes personal as you join discussion groups where you can share your own family’s immigration story. Connect with others\, discover shared experiences\, and preserve the precious memories that have shaped who you are today.

SUMMARY:Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah)
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the adult library in Temple Beth AM to observe Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) for a special reception for Dr. Peter Tarjan\, Holocaust survivor\, Thursday\, April 24th at 12:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n\nIn the face of humanity’s darkest chapter\, some stories shine as beacons of hope and resilience. Dr. Peter Tarjan’s journey from Holocaust survivor to professor emeritus stands as a powerful testament to the human spirit’s ability to triumph over unimaginable adversity. \n\n\n\n\nThis profound truth echoes through Dr. Tarjan’s remarkable life story\, which began in the shadows of Nazi-occupied Budapest. At just eight years old\, he faced a reality no child should ever experience – the loss of both parents during the Holocaust. Yet\, from these depths of tragedy\, he would rise to build an extraordinary legacy in America. \n\n\n\nAs we prepare to commemorate Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) on April 24th\, Dr. Tarjan’s presence at Temple Beth Am’s adult reading room offers us a rare and precious opportunity. His story isn’t just about survival – it’s about the power of perseverance\, the importance of memory\, and the promise of new beginnings. \n\n\n\nThrough his journey from Holocaust survivor to accomplished biomedical engineer and University of Miami professor\, Dr. Tarjan embodies the very essence of the American dream. His story reminds us that our greatest strengths often emerge from our deepest wounds\, and that the human spirit can flourish even after experiencing the unthinkable. \n\n\n\n*** Following books and works by Dr. Tarjan on display in the library \n\n\n\n“Children who survived the final solution” \n\n\n\n“Transplanted Lives The adventures of young Jewish Immigrants from post-Fascist and Communist Hungary to the Free World following the 1956 Uprising” \n\n\n\n“Red star\, blue star”: the lives and times of Jewish students in communist Hungary (1948-1956)\, compiled with Arthur Handler and Susan V Meschel \n\n\n\n“Hungarian Patchwork” with Susan V Meschel \n\n\n\nPrologue for “Two Branches Two Destinies” by Claudia Prengler StarotaIn two versions (English and Spanish)

SUMMARY:Unraveling Family Mysteries: A Journey of Discovery
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 17th at 1:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nat Northeast Dade – Aventura Branch Library \n\n\n\nHave you ever wondered about a long-lost family member\, their story forever lingering in the shadows of your past? For *Paulette Bronstein*\, current president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami (JGSGM)\, this question wasn’t just theoretical—it was deeply personal. \n\n\n\nAt the tender age of eight\, Paulette’s father vanished from her life\, leaving behind a void filled only with questions. Her mother\, the keeper of these family secrets\, remained steadfastly silent about his whereabouts and fate. It wasn’t until after her mother’s passing that Paulette embarked on what would become an extraordinary journey of discovery. \n\n\n\nThrough meticulous research combining: \n\n\n\n\nDNA testing\n\n\n\nHistorical records from Georgia and South Carolina\n\n\n\nCemetery documentation\n\n\n\nFamily testimonies\n\n\n\nAdvanced genealogical tools\n\n\n\n\n\nPaulette’s personal quest not only unveiled her father’s story but also created a roadmap for others seeking their own missing family connections. This compelling narrative of persistence and discovery promises to inspire and guide anyone interested in uncovering their own family mysteries. \n\n\n\nJoin us for this unmissable presentation at the Aventura Public Library\, April 17\, 2025\, at 1:00 PM\, where Paulette will share her intimate journey and provide practical insights into genealogical research that could help you piece together your own family puzzle. \n\n\n\n\n“Every family has a story waiting to be uncovered\, but sometimes we need the right tools and determination to bring it to light.”

SUMMARY:Holocaust Remembrance Day 2025 with Jeannette Grunhaus de Gelman
DESCRIPTION:Observing in January \n\n\n\nHolocaust Remembrance Day 2025 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, January 12th\, 2024\, at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\nSunday Salon\, at the adult reading room (Library) located in the Hub at Temple Beth Am\, \n\n\n\n5950 N Kendall Drive\, Pinecrest\, FL. 33156 \n\n\n\nAuthor Jeannette Grunhaus de Gelman presents: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Sunny Days We Sang\, A Holocaust Story of Survival and Resilience \n\n\n\n\nWhen the Germans march into their little Polish shtetl at the start of World War II\, the Jews of Wlodawa see their lives abruptly torn apart. For Hil and Alexandra\, it marks the beginning of a struggle to survive during which they will experience ghettos\, roundups\, hiding places\, and false identities\, a struggle where the line between life and death will depend on small decisions made along the way.  \n\n\n\n\nWith the story of the destruction of Polish Jewry as a backdrop\, Jeannette Grunhaus de Gelman tells us the remarkable tale of her parents’ journey\, which will take them from the dark years in a Europe at war to safety and a new life in Venezuela.  \n\n\n\nThis event comes to us in observance of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, co- sponsored with the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami.   \n\n\n\nPlease confirm your attendance RSVP jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com.

DESCRIPTION:Discussion group gathering at Temple Beth Am’s Adult Reading Room\, administered by Sunday Salon along with the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday September 15th\, 2024\, at 10:30 am \n\n\n\n Event administered by Sunday Salon with the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\nTemple Beth Am5950 N Kendall Drive\, Pinecrest\, FL 33156 \n\n\n\nJoin us for an engaging presentation\, starting our new season 2024-2025!\n\n\n\nFrom Old to New: Discovery and Insight into a Long-Forgotten World \n\n\n\n\nDoron Friedman\, who has lived and worked throughout the Americas\, Israel and Europe and traveled extensively to various corners of the world for both work and pleasure\, relates an incredible story of his genealogical search. In the mid-2000s\, Doron stumbled upon a treasure trove of family documents in Israel\, including photos\, official correspondence and personal letters ranging from the late 1800’s to the late 1940s. Together\, they tell a fascinating modern-day history of the Friedman family in the Old World and their experience and struggles in the Land of Israel before the creation of the modern-day State. They document everyday life in a Jewish enclave in a small Ruthenian outpost of Subcarpathian Galicia\, the trials and tribulations of soldiers and families in WWI\, interwar Poland\, Aliya to the Jewish homeland\, rising antisemitism back home\, struggles in creating a new life and the ultimate horrors of the Holocaust and the demise of those left behind in the old world. Doron will recount the process of organization\, documentation\, human interaction and the domino effect of how one discovery led to the next\, revealing fascinating historical first-person accounts and stories\, ranging from the detailed experience of a Jewish soldier in WWI to present day interactions with the family of friends mentioned in letters over 100 years ago. \n\n\n\n\nPlease confirm your attendance RSVP: jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Jordan Auslander: Genealogy Goes to the Movies
DESCRIPTION:We are celebrating our 35th AnniversaryInviting all our seniors\, past and present members who made it happen!Together with our guest speaker \n\n\n\nJordan Auslander \n\n\n\nFAMOUS GENEALOGY DETECTIVE (and comedian as well) \n\n\n\nGenealogy Goes to The Movies \n\n\n\nSunday\, February 11\, 2024\, at 11:00 AM \n\n\n\nLive Meeting at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation \n\n\n\n4200 Biscayne Blvd. Miami\, FloridaGPS search: 15 Federal Hwy\, Miami\, FL 33137 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJordan Auslander is a New York-based forensic genealogist\, title\, and real estate historian\, who has pursued cases across the United States\, The Caribbean\, Europe\, and Israel. He published an index to Jewish records in Slovak Archives\, and a Genealogical Gazetteer of Greater Hungary. He is a former board member of Jewish Genealogical Society of New York. His applied acting pretensions are as “Heir Jordan\, Extreme Genealogist\,” Telly award winner for RootsTelevision.com and the ‘reliably inappropriate’ host of IAJGS conference Game Show Night. \n\n\n\n\nGenealogy Goes to The Movies \n\n\n\nProgram summary: \n\n\n\nA half hour montage of how genealogy is portrayed in popular films and television. Hollywood does not let accuracy get in the way of a good story. This can be both infuriating in perpetuating myths and hilarious\, from a 1930 take on the future 1980 census\, name changing at Ellis Island to science fiction\, where it is still not “all on the internet:” current vital records on library open stacks and shoot-outs in cemeteries. \n\n\n\nAside from entertainment\, the two-fold purpose is to show how genealogy is pervasive in popular media and how resources and methodology are misrepresented. The discussion that follows focuses on how to manage expectations and offer reality checks for what can be accomplished with family research. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP to Paulette Bronstein at JGSGM.President@gmail.com and a copy to jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com
