SUMMARY:Jeffrey Dorn: The Jew's Ring
DESCRIPTION:Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami presents \n\n\n\nWELCOME BACK TO OUR SUNDAY SALON IN THE ADULT READING ROOM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDates: Sunday\, September 7th\, 2025Time: 10:30 AMLocation: Temple Beth Am\, Adults Reading Room (The Hub Library)Address: 5950 SW 88th St\, Pinecrest\, FL 33156 \n\n\n\nJoin us for an engaging\, unusual\, and mystifying presentation by Jeffrey Dorn\, brought to us by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami. It’s called The Jew’s Ring. It is a true story from his life about reverse antisemitism with a surprising connection to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. \n\n\n\nIf you’ve delved into the myriad conspiracy theories surrounding JFK’s death\, get ready for one that will leave you speechless–and yet it is strangely plausible. The heart of this tale lies in a document from the Warren Commission that will be unveiled at the conclusion of this presentation. Join us as Jeff sheds new light on this historical mystery. \n\n\n\nADULT READING ROOM REMINDERReminder to visit our own libraries here on campus where you can enjoy award-winning books and so much more. ~ We welcome you all to our extraordinary library collection\, which is now divided into three locations\, all enhance the mission of the Temple Beth Am Congregational Library – “to provide materials of education\, entertainment and enrichment for congregation and community.” Our Fiction books are in Meeting Room 2\, where you can find detailed instructions for borrowing whatever you like. It marks a time of mourning\, reflecting on significant events like the destruction of the ancient temples and the deep hope for the coming of the Messiah. Understanding this day helps connect you to a rich history that spans thousands of years. \n\n\n\n\nHow Tisha B’Av Relates to Jewish Genealogy\n\n\n\nCollective Memory and Personal Lineage Tisha B’Av is a day of remembering shared suffering and resilience. He will guide you through the historical significance of Tisha Be Av and explore the genealogical timeline of the Jewish people. SUMMARY:Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah)
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the adult library in Temple Beth AM to observe Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) for a special reception for Dr. Peter Tarjan\, Holocaust survivor\, Thursday\, April 24th at 12:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n\nIn the face of humanity’s darkest chapter\, some stories shine as beacons of hope and resilience. Dr. Peter Tarjan’s journey from Holocaust survivor to professor emeritus stands as a powerful testament to the human spirit’s ability to triumph over unimaginable adversity. \n\n\n\n\nThis profound truth echoes through Dr. Tarjan’s remarkable life story\, which began in the shadows of Nazi-occupied Budapest. At just eight years old\, he faced a reality no child should ever experience – the loss of both parents during the Holocaust. Yet\, from these depths of tragedy\, he would rise to build an extraordinary legacy in America. \n\n\n\nAs we prepare to commemorate Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) on April 24th\, Dr. Tarjan’s presence at Temple Beth Am’s adult reading room offers us a rare and precious opportunity. His story isn’t just about survival – it’s about the power of perseverance\, the importance of memory\, and the promise of new beginnings. \n\n\n\nThrough his journey from Holocaust survivor to accomplished biomedical engineer and University of Miami professor\, Dr. Tarjan embodies the very essence of the American dream. His story reminds us that our greatest strengths often emerge from our deepest wounds\, and that the human spirit can flourish even after experiencing the unthinkable. \n\n\n\n*** Following books and works by Dr. Tarjan on display in the library \n\n\n\n“Children who survived the final solution” \n\n\n\n“Transplanted Lives The adventures of young Jewish Immigrants from post-Fascist and Communist Hungary to the Free World following the 1956 Uprising” \n\n\n\n“Red star\, blue star”: the lives and times of Jewish students in communist Hungary (1948-1956)\, compiled with Arthur Handler and Susan V Meschel \n\n\n\n“Hungarian Patchwork” with Susan V Meschel \n\n\n\nPrologue for “Two Branches Two Destinies” by Claudia Prengler StarotaIn two versions (English and Spanish)

SUMMARY:From Old to New: Discovery and Insight into a Long-Forgotten World
DESCRIPTION:Discussion group gathering at Temple Beth Am’s Adult Reading Room\, administered by Sunday Salon along with the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday September 15th\, 2024\, at 10:30 am \n\n\n\n Event administered by Sunday Salon with the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\nTemple Beth Am5950 N Kendall Drive\, Pinecrest\, FL 33156 \n\n\n\nJoin us for an engaging presentation\, starting our new season 2024-2025!\n\n\n\nFrom Old to New: Discovery and Insight into a Long-Forgotten World \n\n\n\n\nDoron Friedman\, who has lived and worked throughout the Americas\, Israel and Europe and traveled extensively to various corners of the world for both work and pleasure\, relates an incredible story of his genealogical search. In the mid-2000s\, Doron stumbled upon a treasure trove of family documents in Israel\, including photos\, official correspondence and personal letters ranging from the late 1800’s to the late 1940s. Together\, they tell a fascinating modern-day history of the Friedman family in the Old World and their experience and struggles in the Land of Israel before the creation of the modern-day State. They document everyday life in a Jewish enclave in a small Ruthenian outpost of Subcarpathian Galicia\, the trials and tribulations of soldiers and families in WWI\, interwar Poland\, Aliya to the Jewish homeland\, rising antisemitism back home\, struggles in creating a new life and the ultimate horrors of the Holocaust and the demise of those left behind in the old world. Doron will recount the process of organization\, documentation\, human interaction and the domino effect of how one discovery led to the next\, revealing fascinating historical first-person accounts and stories\, ranging from the detailed experience of a Jewish soldier in WWI to present day interactions with the family of friends mentioned in letters over 100 years ago. \n\n\n\n\nPlease confirm your attendance RSVP: jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com
