DESCRIPTION:In cooperation with the Jewish Genealogical Society of Palm Beach County Inc. \n\n\n\nLive and on Zoom Meeting at South County Civic Center  \n\n\n\n16700 South Jog Rd\, Delray Beach\, FL 33446 \n\n\n\nPaulette Bronstein-President-Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaulette Bronstein was born in Augusta\, Georgia\, lived in Woodmere\, New York for 56 years and has resided in Aventura Florida since 2003. She began a search for her missing father in 1994 and has been on an extraordinary genealogical journey since then. She has researched her family history during multiple trips to Alaska\, South Carolina\, Georgia\, and Lithuania. A website for her grandfather’s shtetl\, Salakas Lithuania\, was created by her in 2013 (https://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/Salakas/). \n\n\n\nPaulette has been the President of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami since 2019. She created four different family history books for her children and grandchildren using the MyCanvas program. Hoping that her children and grandchildren might one day be interested in their family history\, Paulette decided that creating these books would be an appropriate culminating activity to her 25 plus years of genealogy research. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPaulette will lead a workshop format to help participants understand how to create a family history book using MyCanvas. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJGSGM Members are invited to attend. SUMMARY:Paulette Bronstein: What Our Genealogical Research Can Reveal
DESCRIPTION:What Our Genealogical Research Can Reveal\n\n\n\nMy great grandfather was a horse thief and brothel owner! \n\n\n\nZoom meeting Sunday\, September 18th\, 2022 10:30 A.M.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker – Paulette Bronstein – President Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\nSince 1995 Paulette has been able to trace her paternal ancestry back to the 17 th century. She attended her first IAJGS Conference in 2010 in Los Angeles and an additional seven of the yearly IAJGS conferences (International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies). Since then\, she has used Jewishgen.org and Litvak SIG to trace her Jewish ancestors. She had success tracing her maternal grandfather’s family\, but her maternal grandmother’s family remained a mystery until two months ago. Nikita\, a 25-year-old Moscow researcher\, contacted Paulette using Jewishgen.org’s Family Finder on May 20\, 2022. He found court documents in the Moscow Police Archives accusing Lieb Gamus\, Paulette’s great grandfather\, of being a horse thief and brothel owner! Join us for a presentation about finding a criminal in the family with the help of a Moscow native with access to court records in Russia. \n\n\n\n\n\nPlease\, register with: jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:The Second Exodus: The Clandestine Jewish Immigrants to Palestine Prior to Israel Independence (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:The following events are done in collaboration with Temple Beth Am Library’s Sunday Salon & Sephardi Voices \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Second Exodus: The Clandestine Jewish Immigrants to Palestine Prior to Israel Independence\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, April 3 at 10:30 am (Part 1) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGemma R. Birnbaum \n\n\n\nExecutive director of American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis presentation will focus on clandestine immigration immediately before\, during\, and after World War II\, as persecuted Jews in Europe tried to make their way into the British Mandate of Palestine\, often deemed illegally by the British authorities who controlled the region. This journey was dangerous and failed more often than it succeeded. These immigration restrictions\, many of which were laid out in 1939’s British White Paper\, became the subject of international debate after images of Jewish refugees being forced off ships at gunpoint and incarcerated in camps in Cyprus emerged in the media. Conspiracy theories around whether the Jews were truly refugees began to emerge\, and Jewish leaders around the globe\, members of the United Nations\, and the Truman administration found themselves embroiled in a fight to have these restrictions lifted and the prisoners in Cyprus released. By 1948\, increased Jewish immigration to Palestine increased regional tensions\, and as the state of Israel was established\, the situation exploded into a continued refugee crisis and all-out war. \n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, May 15 at 10:30 am (Part 2) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLyn Julius \n\n\n\nFounder of Harif\, UK Associationof Jews from Middle east and North Africa \n\n\n\nLyn Julius is a journalist\, blogger\, and speaker. SUMMARY:Professor Miriam Hoffman: Curious Rabbinic Tales: The Shortest Tall Stories
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Salons\n\n\n\nPresented monthly by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Miriam Hoffman is a retired professor of Yiddish language\, literature and film\, Jewish culture\, Yiddish humor\, and classical and minor Yiddish writers. She is also a known Yiddish journalist and worked as a feature writer for the Yiddish Forward from 1982 to today. Now\, with her latest book\, she brings us the magic of storytelling. Folktales belong to the earliest folk literature\, predating Jewish sources. Once they were adapted into the Jewish setting\, the tales were integrated into our own mythology. Folktales were told as parables with a moral undercurrent to expose human frailty and strength\, vanity\, and heroism. Anything that was not said openly was disguised as a parable or a folktale. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo join us by Zoom or Live Streaming\, contact JGSGM to get your link: jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Professor Hal Bookbinder: Practicing Safe Computing
DESCRIPTION:The Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami (JGSGM) is collaborating with the Jewish Genealogy SIG (Special Interest Group) of Naples/Lee Co FL mentored by Mr. Arthur Sissman. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom presentation: \n\n\n\nPracticing Safe Computing by Professor Hal Bookbinder\n\n\n\nAlong with malware infecting your computer and hackers attempting to con you\, your data on the Web is also at risk from breaches beyond your control. Facebook (March 2021)\, Microsoft (January 2020)\, Capital One (July 2019)\, Marriott (November 2018)\, Twitter (May 2018)\, Yahoo (September 2016) and even MyHeritage (June 2018) have experienced massive breaches in which millions of customer records were exposed. Even in the absence of bad actors\, computers become corrupted and storage devices fail resulting in the potential loss of years of genealogical research. This talk discusses the risks\, the myths\, ways to reduce the likelihood of being hacked and how to minimize the impact of hacks and breaches that do occur. For a road map of issues and solutions\, see Hal’s monthly series of Safe Computing articles\, published in the JGSCV Newsletter\, at https://www.tinyurl.com/SafeComputingArticles. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHal is a retired information systems professional who continues to instruct business courses at the university level. \n\n\n\nHe has been actively researching his genealogy for more than three decades\, identifying over 4\,000 relatives and tracing two lines to the mid-1700s in modern Ukraine. Hal has written and spoken on border changes\, migration\, citizenship\, safe computing unique research techniques. \n\n\n\nHal is a past president of the JGS of Los Angeles and of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies. Hal publishes a series of monthly articles on safe computing which are freely available at https://www.tinyurl.com/SafeComputingArticles. He and his wife\, Marci\, were raised in the Catskills of New York State and now live in the Los Angeles area.                                                                                                                                                                                                                       \n\n\n\n\n\nPlease register with jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com if you did not attend the previous classes with the mentor. DESCRIPTION:The following Zoom event is done in collaboration with Temple Beth Am Library’s Sunday Salon \n\n\n\nin observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAllan J. Hall J.D. with his own testimony \n\n\n\n\nAllan Hall was born in Cracow\, Poland in 1935. He led a charmed life until September 1939\, when Nazis marched into Poland. Seeking safety\, the family walked over two hundred miles to Lvov\, where Allan was the first child picked up in the children’s pogrom in the Lvov Ghetto. With false identity papers\, the family fled to Warsaw\, where Allan and his mother were arrested and taken to the train station to be sent to Treblinka. When the trains briefly stopped running\, Allan was marched to an orphanage in the Warsaw Ghetto. Allan’s father\, passing as Aryan\, rented an office in a high-rise building which housed German Air Force headquarters\, where they hid for two years. When the war ended\, Allan’s father was arrested\, and his mother sent Allan with his baby brother to make his way to Palestine. Hunted by the Soviets for months\, eleven-year-old Allan bravely made his way across Europe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContact us to get your link: jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Janice Masur: Shalom Uganda
DESCRIPTION:December Sunday Salons\n\n\n\nPresented monthly by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJanice Masur grew up in a tiny\, remote European Jewish community in Kampala\, Uganda\, under British Imperial rule\, with no rabbi or Jewish infrastructure. And yet\, this community of only twenty-three families formed a cohesive group that celebrated all Jewish festivals together and upheld their Jewish identity. Sadly\, while Kampala Jewry made every effort to survive\, it eventually failed and withered under the hot African sun. \n\n\n\nIn Shalom Uganda: A Jewish Community on the Equator\, Masur tells her story of living in this little-known Ashkenazi Jewish community from 1949 to 1961. Because so many Jewish communities were obliterated in the last century\, she documents\, remembers\, and preserves Kampala European Jewry with all the respect that it deserves. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Jacobvitz\, who serves on the Advisory Board of the Sousa Mendez Foundation\, brings us this fascinating author as part of his foundation’s programs. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo join us by Zoom or Live Streaming\, contact JGSGM to get your link: jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Horia Haim F. Ghiuzeli: Centuries-old history of the family names of the Jews of Morocco
DESCRIPTION:Temple Beth Am Sunday Salons via Zoom and live streaming \n\n\n\nSlice of Jewish Life + The Morocco Community\, presenting: \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHoria Haim F. Ghiuzeli\n\n\n\nHoria Haim F. Ghiuzeli\, a historian\, is the Director of the Databases of ANU – Museum of the Jewish People. The presentation focuses on the centuries-old history of the family names of the Jews of Morocco.  Surnames may provide an insight into the geographical origins of some families or into the occupations of their ancestors\, the role they played in the life of their communities and the way family members were perceived by their neighbors and friends. Understanding the rich linguistic background of the Jews of Morocco is an essential clue for a correct interpretation of the meaning of their family names. A knowledge of the meaning of these family names may reveal details about past Jewish life in Morocco and could be instrumental for a successful research of family roots. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModerated by Professor Henry Green\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor of Religious Studies of Judaic and Sephardi Studies at the University of Miami – founder of Sephardic Voices – whose latest book published through Just in Press is SEPHARDI VOICES: The Untold Expulsion of Jews from Arab Lands   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipant Sete Bentata\, a renowned architect born in Tetouan\, Morocco\, tracing her family story. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP online for the event with jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:Libby Copeland: The Cultural Phenomenon of Home DNA Testing
DESCRIPTION:The following event is done in collaboration with Temple Beth Am Library’s Sunday Salon: \n\n\n\nThe Cultural Phenomenon of Home DNA Testing\n\n\n\n\n\nLibby Copeland: is an award-winning journalist who has written for the Washington Post\, New York magazine\, the New York Times\, the Atlantic\, and many other publications. She specializes in the intersection of science and culture and will explore with us the extraordinary cultural phenomenon of home DNA testing\, which is redefining family history. It will draw on Libby Copeland’s years of research for her new book The Lost Family: How DNA Testing is Upending Who We Are (Abrams\, 2020)\, which The Wall Street Journal calls “a fascinating account of lives dramatically affected by genetic sleuthing.” With more than 37 million people having been tested\, a tipping point has been reached. Virtually all Americans are affected whether they have been tested or not\, and millions have been impacted by significant revelations in their immediate families.  The presentation will discuss the implications of home DNA testing for Jewish genealogy\, as well as the unique challenges of genetic genealogy for Ashkenazim. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo join us by Zoom\, contact to get a link \n\n\n\njgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\nMore Info
