SUMMARY:Jordan Auslander: Genealogy Goes to the Movies
DESCRIPTION:We are celebrating our 35th AnniversaryInviting all our seniors\, past and present members who made it happen!Together with our guest speaker \n\n\n\nJordan Auslander \n\n\n\nFAMOUS GENEALOGY DETECTIVE (and comedian as well) \n\n\n\nGenealogy Goes to The Movies \n\n\n\nSunday\, February 11\, 2024\, at 11:00 AM \n\n\n\nLive Meeting at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation \n\n\n\n4200 Biscayne Blvd. Miami\, FloridaGPS search: 15 Federal Hwy\, Miami\, FL 33137 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJordan Auslander is a New York-based forensic genealogist\, title\, and real estate historian\, who has pursued cases across the United States\, The Caribbean\, Europe\, and Israel. He published an index to Jewish records in Slovak Archives\, and a Genealogical Gazetteer of Greater Hungary. He is a former board member of Jewish Genealogical Society of New York. His applied acting pretensions are as “Heir Jordan\, Extreme Genealogist\,” Telly award winner for RootsTelevision.com and the ‘reliably inappropriate’ host of IAJGS conference Game Show Night. \n\n\n\n\nGenealogy Goes to The Movies \n\n\n\nProgram summary: \n\n\n\nA half hour montage of how genealogy is portrayed in popular films and television. Hollywood does not let accuracy get in the way of a good story. This can be both infuriating in perpetuating myths and hilarious\, from a 1930 take on the future 1980 census\, name changing at Ellis Island to science fiction\, where it is still not “all on the internet:” current vital records on library open stacks and shoot-outs in cemeteries. \n\n\n\nAside from entertainment\, the two-fold purpose is to show how genealogy is pervasive in popular media and how resources and methodology are misrepresented. The discussion that follows focuses on how to manage expectations and offer reality checks for what can be accomplished with family research. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP to Paulette Bronstein at JGSGM.President@gmail.com and a copy to jgsgm.vpprogramming@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Steve Jaron: Unlocking The Past: Unlocking the Ashkenazi Dutch Jewish Ancestry
DESCRIPTION:ANNOUNCEMENT – THE JEWISH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF GREATER MIAMI \n\n\n\nAt Greater Miami Jewish Federation4200 Biscayne Blvd. Miami\, Florida \n\n\n\nUNLOCKING THE PAST: EXPLORING ASHKENAZI DUTCH JEWISH ANCESTRY \n\n\n\nINTRODUCING STEVE JARON\, PRESIDENT OF THE JEWISH GENEALOGY SOCIETY OF PITTSBURGH\, CO-CHAIR AT IAJGS TECH COMMITTEE AND IAJGS LIASON \n\n\n\n***Meeting is scheduled for Zoom*** \n\n\n\nZoom link shared one day before the event.Light refreshments will be available. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an enlightening exploration of Ashkenazi Dutch Jewish ancestry led by Steve Jaron\, a dedicated genealogist with a compelling story to share. In this presentation\, you’ll accompany Steve on a deeply personal journey as he delves into the intriguing world of his Dutch roots within the Ashkenazi Jewish community. Through ancestral narratives filled with surprising family connections and heartwarming reunions\, you’ll gain a unique perspective on the power of genealogical research to unveil hidden stories and connections. Steve’s expertise will be at your disposal as he imparts practical research strategies and tools that will equip you for your own genealogical quests. This event is open to everyone\, whether you have Ashkenazi Dutch Jewish ancestry or simply possess a curiosity about researching in unfamiliar territories. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteve Jaron Bio \n\n\n\nSteve Jaron is a lifelong Pittsburgh resident whose passion for genealogy has been shaped by two significant experiences. Firstly\, during his bar-mitzvah trip to Israel\, he had the opportunity to meet with several relatives\, including his great uncle. His great uncle shared a captivating family story about discovering their shared ancestry when his great aunt brought a picture of her great grandparents into their home. This revelation led to the realization that they were second cousins. Although Steve would later learn that his uncle was quite the storyteller\, this tale kindled his interest in family history. \n\n\n\nThe second pivotal moment in Steve’s genealogical journey occurred during his college years when he took a Spanish class. As part of an assignment\, he had to create a family tree to learn various Spanish relationships. Fortunately\, Steve already had a well-documented family tree thanks to his great aunt’s efforts. Inspired by this class\, he decided to explore further and googled an uncommon Jewish last name\, “de Jongh.” To his surprise\, he stumbled upon an online version of a book meticulously detailing his grandmother and great aunt’s mother’s ancestors in Holland\, and from that moment\, his fascination with genealogy took root. \n\n\n\nSteve’s current genealogical focus centers on his Galitzianer and German branches\, with plans to eventually continue his father’s genealogical research in Ukraine and Belarus. In 2017\, he took on the key role of revitalizing the Jewish Genealogy Society of Pittsburgh and currently serves as its president. His commitment to the genealogical community extends beyond his local chapter. He has assumed the role of IAJGS Sysadmin and Tech Committee co-chair and serves as an IAJGS Member Liaison\, further contributing to the broader genealogy community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease confirm your attendance or request a Zoom Link:Paulette Bronstein\, President JGSGM.President@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore Info
